The end of Game of Thrones series is fast approaching, having just watched episode 5, I felt Drogon’s fire through the screen. Am I the only one who felt that Cersei’s death was extremely underwhelming? I wanted to see cruel Cersei suffer, I wanted to see the nun come back to life with the bell saying “Shame…Shame…Shame!”
As I was watching Daenerys become the mad queen, burning the Red Keep, soldiers, children, and mothers alike, for a moment I was mildly distracted by Westeros themed Starbucks mug. It occurred to me, outside in the real world, that GoT has got plenty of partnerships going on. It is an amazing series with record viewership on HBO and has won a lot of awards. I looked it up and to no one’s surprise, GoT has a TON of brands flocking to partner up. The important question is, which brand deserves the sit on the Iron Throne?
Let’s explore some of the most exciting and creative partnerships out there.
Top 11 Game of Thrones Partnerships
Oreo – #GameOfCookies
Mondelez’s Oreo used 2,750 cookies to reconstruct the stop-motion titles of the Game of Thrones franchise to promote one of its largest brand tie-ups ever. For this campaign, Oreo came up with four cookie designs each representing the Night King, House Stark, House Targaryen, and House Lannister.
We don’t know who is going to end up on the Iron Throne, but we sure know which cookie did. It’s this one right here.
Budlight – #ForTheThrone
During the second quarter of the Super Bowl, Budlight, known for delivering iconic Super Bowl commercials, partnered with HBO and delivered a parody of the jousting tournament in Game of Thrones.
In the video, you can see Butt Knight, *cough*, I mean Bud Knight in a jousting contest with the Mountain. It doesn’t matter who won because Drogo flew by, burps at them and consequently burnt the whole venue down.
American Red Cross at SXSW – #BleedForTheThrone
We all saw a lot of good blood going to waste during the war with the Night King and the final war with Cersei.. Go to American Red Cross and #BleedForTheThrone appropriately.
Fans are encouraged to bleed (safely and responsibly) for the throne to get closer to the Iron Throne and receive a Hand of the King/Queen pin.
Adidas – GoT Ultraboost
Adidas rolled out their new Game of Thrones Ultraboost sneakers with tiny tag on the heel that reads “Night’s Watch,” “Fire and Blood,” or “Hear me Roar.”
Maybe Arya went to put on a pair of these GoT Ultraboost to improve her “stealth” stats before she snuck up on the Night King.
Happening in Hong Kong, I want some fried chicken by Drogon. What amazingly creative imagery!
Make up plays an important role in the GoT series. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the visuals as much as we did. Urban Decay launched a whole line of GoT themed eyeshadow palettes and sword-like brushes for the throne!
Mountain Dew – #ACanHasNoName
So Mountain Dew got a few of their famous friends to celebrate #ForTheThrone by getting them to try the GoT theme song – acapella style.
Mountain dew released a limited #ACanHasNoName cans. When the can is warm, it is white. When the can is chilled, Arya’s kill list appears!
To win these cans, fans are directed to Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. To enter the competition, fans need to tell Mountain Dew what they would sacrifice for the can. Another way to redeem an unbranded Mountain Dew can is to go on a scavenger hunt in New York and Los Angeles for coins that only fit the Iron Vending Machines stocked with the cans.
Xbox is overdoing it with this collaboration with GoT. If this is not the most gorgeous House Targaryen console I’ve seen in 2019. If you dislike House Targaryen after Danerys started roasting children alive with her dragon, fret not! Xbox is also releasing the Night King console!!
The Bellagio Takeover
This takes the X out of Xbox and put the Xtra in the “Winter is Here” performance at the Fountains of Bellagio. We love it when companies overdo it. YOLO
Johnnie Walker collaborated with GoT to design a limited edition scotch whisky. Utilising temperature-sensitive ink technology, when frozen, the bottle reveals a secret message “Winter is Here.” Bewitching.
Inspired by Johnnie Walker’s version, Diageo worked with GoT to release a limited-edition collection of single malt whiskeys to commemorate the occasion.
These brands really challenged the realm of creativity and for some brands their marketing budget!
With so many epic partnerships going on, it is difficult to pick just one partnership as the winner. However, hard decisions must be made.
My verdict is..
OREOS; the stop motion video was fantastically shot, it’s quirky, and it involves fans by encouraging them to pick a house.
Which brand do you think deserves to sit on the Iron Throne?
In light of the Game of Thrones series coming to an end, a reminder to super fans out there that no matter how tough life is, Drakarys is not the solution. In the real world, you don’t have a dragon to protect you, and you will be charged with arson (and murder.)
Thank you G.R.R Martin for sharing your world with us, and everyone in the Game of Thrones team for bringing it to life.
