In conjunction with Earth Day, Lil Dicky (real name Dave Andrew Burd), a 31-year-old rapper from Cheltenham Township, Philadelphia released an environmental-themed music video titled ‘Earth’ with the aim of inspiring people to make a difference for the planet. Within a few hours, it gained about 3.5million views on YouTube. Burd has kept this project a secret for 3 years prior to sharing it with the world.
What makes the whole song cooler?
The production of the song brought together a talented cast and crew. The music video was co-directed by Nigel Tierney, of Emmy Award-winning content studio RYOT alongside Federico Heller of 3Dar, Oddbot Animation, and Iconic Engine. Producer and songwriter Benny Blanco and Norwegian DJ Cashmere Cat served as producers.
“Bringing Dave’s wonderful vision to life was not only creatively rewarding for all of us involved, but it quickly became evident during its creation that we had an incredible responsibility to empower our generation to rally together and reverse the effects of climate change,” mentioned by Nigel Tierney.
Additionally, 30 well-known celebrities in the entertainment business including Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Halsey, Zac Brown, Brendon Urie, Hailee Steinfeld, Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg, Kevin Hart, Adam Levine, Shawn Mendes, Charlie Puth, Sia, Miley Cyrus, Lil Jon, Rita Ora, Miguel, Katy Perry, Lil Yachty, Ed Sheeran, Meghan Trainor, Joel Embiid, Tory Lanez, John Legend, Bad Bunny, Psy, Kris Wu, Backstreet Boys and Leonardo DiCaprio lent their voice in the making of the video with each celebrity playing the role of an animal in the music video.
“This song couldn’t just be one artist for it to have the impact it’s having, and this Earth can’t just be about one person having an impact either. We are in it together. “ Lil Dicky mentioned to Billboard during the interview.
How did everything start?
In the beginning, Burd wanted to make a song about animals but later changed his mind after becoming aware of the huge environmental issues affecting the planet today. He then decided to try and do something to raise awareness and money for our environment before it is too late. “It’s probably a good thing that all the profits that come from this song goes to charities involved in saving the environment,” he mentioned to Rolling Stone.
As Burd knew nothing about the non-profit and environmental industry, he needed a partner that was familiar with the space. Through interactions with a representative of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, Burd met the actor himself and pitched his song to which DiCaprio is happy with and decided to participate. It was agreed that the net profits of the song, music videos and merchandise would go to partner organizations of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation involved in combating climate change. Some of the organizations include The Solutions Project, the Shark Conservation Fund, the Global Greengrants Fund, the Quick Response Fund for Nature and the Carbon Cycle Institute all of which are involved in assisting communities working to protect critical wildlife, ecosystems and support regenerative farming practices.
How Lil Dicky got all the celebrities?
He initially started pitching his idea to his friends and people that he knew. Charlie Puth was the first person he got long Snoop Dogg, Adam Levine, Meghan Trainor, and Justin Bieber. From there it became easier to attract other talents into the project. Sometimes he’d visit them during the sessions in the studios or they would visit Blanco’s studio while others would send him emails. Burd also recalled a time when he set up a booth in Ariana Grande’s dressing room at a Wango Tango concert and got a group of people within the hour.
The website was launched to accompany the song serves to educate people about the environment, the changes it is going through and ways to get involved in protecting the planet.
The planet does not have much time. Climate change is moving at a faster pace than previously imagined and the threat isn’t being taken seriously by many people. However, the little changes made today can drastically alter the future. Everybody wants a better world to live not just for themselves but for future generations to come and the best time to start is now.
